Romantic Valentine Breaks

If you’d like to escape the dreary February weather and jet off for a few days of romance, look no further than the Fit2Travel guide to romantic breaks for 2020. We’ve got some amazing destinations for you to visit, so avoid the crowds and clichés in Paris and Rome and take a trip to Malaga or Reykjavik – where you’ll find quirky romance and adventure all the way!

Camogli, Italy

Italy is probably one of the most romantic destinations in the world, but we’re steering clear of the well beaten tracks that lead to Rome, Venice and Florence - that’s far too predictable! We’re heading to Liguria, known as the Italian Riviera, home to one of the best Valentine celebrations in the world.

The town of Camolgli, is proud to be the most kitschy, romantic and all things love themed, town in Italy! The streets are decorated, shop windows are adorned with hearts and flowers and there’s a huge weeklong party in dedication to luurrrvee.

One of the must-see attractions is the Valentine Market, where you and your significant other can wander through the stalls filled with handmade trinkets, fripperies and knick-knacks. And, we’re in Italy, so of course there’s a huge array of fresh food and potent drink to warm your hearts, and your bellies too.

If you fancy escaping the hustle and bustle of pure romance, take a trip to nearby Genoa or any number of traditional fishing villages that are nearby. These colourful treasures are packed with traditional Italian food and culture, so well worth a visit if you can.

Malaga, Spain

The Costa del Sol in winter is not necessarily on everybody’s must visit destination list, but Malaga is the jewel in the crown of the Spanish coast, even in February.

While you won’t be getting tanned, you can still don your trunks or bikini and take a trip to the town’s famous spa, Hammam Al Andalus. This is no ordinary spa chain; this is a fully immersive experience. The newly renovated building is a Moorish gem, it’s worth a look for the beautiful building and interiors alone. You and your love can book a session for the sumptuous facilities, including steam rooms and a variety of thermally heated spa pools, but if you’re feeling really fancy, book a relaxing treatment or massage - you won’t regret it.

Once you’re fully relaxed and blissed out from your spa experience, take a walk-through Malaga itself, the city is full of a mixture of Spanish and ancient Arabic architecture, a nod to its ancient Moorish history.

Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, and the city is very proud of its remarkable son. Visit the Picasso Museum and explore Picasso’s art and life. There are lots of other galleries dotted around the city dedicated to Spanish and diverse range of world art.

When you’ve soaked up all the culture you can, pop into one of the many tapas bars where you can taste some wonderfully traditional Spanish food, which like most things in Malaga include a certain Arabic flair, and enjoy a glass of beer for as little as 1 Euro – hic!

Average February Temp: 18 degrees

Tenerife, Canary Islands

Granted, the Canaries are a little further afield than most European resorts but with the four-and-a-half-hour flight, comes all the sunshine - a stunning 11 hours a day on average. That’s worth the flight, right?

Visit Tenerife and have romantic walks along the beach or sip cocktails watching the sunset or visit volcanos and one of the best waterparks in the world – according to Trip Advisor.

Mount Teide, while classed as an active volcano, isn’t particularly lively as it’s been sleeping since 1909. As Teide is the highest point in Spain at its summit, has almost zero light pollution thanks to innovative street lighting and is well above most clouds, it’s a truly stunning place to view the night sky or the sunrise – or both! Pack some snacks and a blanket to snuggle under as it gets very cold at night and enjoy one of nature’s most magnificent shows.

If you’d like a mix of exhilarating water rides and a peaceful glass of fizz with your loved one on a canopied day bed, then look no further than Siam Park – rated a top attraction by Trip Advisor. There really is something for everyone at the award winning water park, floating Thai inspired markets, spa’s and more water rides than you can shake a stick at – and because it’s term time on valentines day there should be plenty of peace and quiet and limited queuing - enjoy!

Average February Temp: 20 degrees

Reykjavik, Iceland

Iceland probably isn’t on any other lists for being conventionally romantic, it doesn’t actually celebrate St. Valentines day traditionally and it’s cold, and dark… We’re not selling it are we - but, and it’s a BIG but, it’s one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth and it’s full of an innocent romance, not influenced by the greetings card industry or sponsored by chocolate makers. That’s why we love it, and we think you will too.

As mentioned, it’s cold but average temperatures are about 3 degrees, so you shouldn’t need any expensive or specialist gear to wear, just layers. And yes, it’s dark as the sun is close to the horizon but this creates the most wonderous golden light that most places only experience at sunset – see? Natural romance.

Take advantage of this light to explore Iceland’s glaciers, mountains and coastline together. You’ll notice that the landscape is dotted with geothermal pools and geysers, so pop on your swim gear and book a trip down to the not so secret, Secret Blue Lagoon near Reykjavik.

You can lay back in the almost unnaturally blue steaming waters that maintain an average temperature of 38-40 degrees all year round. If you’re fortunate, you might get to watch the majestic Northern Lights overhead, as February is a good month to spot them – romance at it’s best.
